En la onda expansiva de revueltas que sacude a Medio Oriente, nadie podía imaginar que hasta la familia Al-Assad de Siria iba a tambalear. El padre, Hafez, y de manera más edulcorada su hijo, Bashar, crearon y mantuvieron una dictadura casi perfecta.
En el poder desde 1971, plasmaron a lo largo del tiempo, y con una ferocidad gélida e inflexible, un gobierno que oscila entre el terror y el autocontrol que genera ese mismo terror. Durante 40 años, eliminaron a sangre y fuego toda expresión política y congelaron cualquier espíritu crítico.
Más que ninguno de sus países vecinos, incluso más que el Líbano e Irak, Siria es un crisol de credos religiosos de intrincadísimas relaciones entre sí, que sólo se mantiene en equilibrio bajo la mano de hierro de un gobierno fuerte e intransigente. La defensa de la tolerancia y la convivencia entre la mayoría sunnita, las corrientes chiitas y las numerosas formas de cristianismo fueron más por conveniencia que por convicción.
La minoría chiita alauita, a la que pertenecen los Al-Assad, siempre fue considerada por el resto de los musulmanes una herejía que debe ser extirpada de raíz: sólo un poder fuerte e inflexible pudo oponerse a esa resistencia y lograr que la mayoría musulmana los viera con mejores ojos.
Como en 1982, cuando para sofocar la oposición de la Hermandad Musulmana, Hafez al-Assad ordenó al ejército que tomara por asalto la ciudad de Hama, bastión de los opositores. Se dice que el ejército nacional masacró a no menos de 20.000 personas, y desde entonces nunca más se oyó hablar en Siria de Hermandad Musulmana ni de ninguna otra forma de oposición política o religiosa.
